About the US Aikido Federation

In 1964 the Founder of Aikido, O-Sensei, sent Yoshimitsu Yamada to New York City to lead Aikido development in the USA. Yamada Sensei established himself at New York Aikikai that year. In 1966 O-Sensei sent another of his direct students, Mitsunari Kanai, to establish New England Aikikai. As these dojos progressed, and students spread out, other schools were established. The US Aikido Federation (USAF) was organized in order to promote communications and interaction between the member dojos. Until the 1990s, the USAF was the only US organization officially recognized by the Aikikai Foundation, Aikido World Headquaters in Japan.

The USAF serves the interest of its affiliated dojos by developing and improving the practice of Aikido, establishing grading standards, and representing the interests of its members in the Aikikai Foundation. The USAF registers all dan (black belt) grades with the Aikikai Foundation and all kyu (non-black belt) ranks within itself. It promotes many seminars and training camps throughout the United States and also publishes a quarterly email newsletter. USAF members are welcome to practice at any USAF dojo when traveling.
